Is WoW Forever free? It costs nothing on top of a World of Warcraft subscription — and nothing you can buy replaces the subscription

Is WoW Forever free? The short answer Blizzard gives is that it is included: 'When World of Warcraft: Forever launches globally on November 4, 2026 … access will be included with your World of Warcraft Subscription or Game Time.' There is no box to buy and no expansion price, which is how Classic has worked since 2019. But it is not free-to-play either — a subscription or Game Time is still the ticket — and one piece of content, the Skyborne race, is sold only inside optional packs starting at $29.99. This page separates the four meanings of 'free' that get tangled together: free with a subscription, free-to-play, free trial, and free of extra purchases.

Free with a subscription: yes, and that is Blizzard's exact wording

Two Blizzard articles say the same thing. The announcement: access 'will be included with your World of Warcraft Subscription or Game Time'. The What's Next recap describes Forever as 'a new permanent home alongside modern and Classic WoW' — a third version of the game under the same subscription, not a separate product. The press put it more directly on reveal day: 'no additional purchases are necessary'.

So if you already pay for World of Warcraft, you will be able to log into Forever on 4 November at 3:00 p.m. Pacific with nothing more to buy. If you do not, you need a subscription or Game Time — the same requirement as modern WoW and Classic. Blizzard has not announced any Forever-specific subscription tier, price change or discount.

Free-to-play: no — and nothing Blizzard has said hints at it

World of Warcraft has never been free-to-play, and Forever does not change that. None of the four Blizzard articles about Forever uses the phrase, and the access rule is stated only in terms of subscription and Game Time. Sites claiming Forever will be free-to-play, or free 'forever' because of the name, are reading the title as a pricing statement. Blizzard's own explanation of the name is about permanence: Forever is 'a promise to keep building this world with the community … and made to last' — 'not a mode, a season, or a new version of Classic'.

A free trial: not announced for Forever, and the beta is not one

Modern World of Warcraft has long offered a free trial to level 20 on retail. Blizzard has published nothing about whether that trial extends to Forever. What it has published is narrower and more interesting: the Invite-A-Friend Launch Codes in the packs each grant 'an eligible invitee access to WoW: Forever from November 4-11'. A friend of a pack buyer therefore gets a week of Forever at launch — the closest thing to a trial in Blizzard's material — with the fine print ('other restrictions apply', a Support Article to come) still to be read. Codes are emailed from 20 October and gift purchases do not include them.

The beta is sometimes mistaken for a trial because it starts early, on 17 September, and runs through 21 October. Guaranteed access comes only with the $59.99 Skyborne Epic Pack or the $79.99 Warcraft Forever Collection; Blizzard's product page also has a free Beta Opt-In — 'a chance to beta test' — which is a lottery, not access. There is no open beta and no key giveaway.

Free of extra purchases: almost — the one exception is the Skyborne

Everything Blizzard has described as launch content is available to a subscriber with no pack: the three new zones (Riverglades, Mount Hyjal, Shen'dralas), more than a thousand new quests, nine dungeons, the two raids from 9 December, the Darkspear Islands battleground, the six new race/class combinations, the Legacy and camping systems, the reworked racials, talents and itemization, the realmless rulesets, opt-in transmog, HD and SD character models and gamepad support.

The exception is the Skyborne: a new playable race with its own starting zone, Zephras Isle, its own racials, druid forms and class access. Blizzard's announcement puts 'access to the new Skyborne race and Zephras Isle starting experience' inside the Skyborne Heroic Pack, and there is no stand-alone unlock, no earnable version and no date for a wider release. Wowhead's 13 September headline — 'Skyborne Race Costs $29.99 to Unlock' — is accurate about the cheapest door. That is the single piece of Forever content a subscription does not cover.

  • Included with a subscription: every zone, quest, dungeon, raid, battleground, system and class change Blizzard has described.
  • Paid only: the Skyborne race and Zephras Isle (from $29.99), plus cosmetics, beta access, Game Time and Warcraft III content in the higher packs.
  • Not sold at all: level boosts, Legacy Points, transfers, beta keys — none appear anywhere in Blizzard's material.

Why the pricing model looks like this

Blizzard has not explained its reasoning in print, but the structure is consistent with how it has treated Classic: the game is part of the subscription's value, and optional purchases carry cosmetics and conveniences. What is new is that the optional purchase includes a race. The What's Next recap makes the Skyborne sound substantial — a race 'whose shared ancestry has led to very different visions for the future', with a faction choice at character creation, Shaman access for Horde-aligned Skyborne and Mage access for Alliance-aligned ones, 'new Skyborne druid forms', 'new racials, customizations, voices, dances, and visual options' — which is why the $29.99 gate drew more attention than a mount would have.

The official forum's Forever category already carries the counter-argument, with threads on the race creating a 'faction support imbalance'. Blizzard has not replied to that in print as of 16 September; when it does, the reply will show on this site's forum watch, which marks threads with a Blizzard response.

Zephras is also home to the Skyborne, a new playable race whose shared ancestry has led to very different visions for the future.

When you pay for what: the cost calendar from today to launch

Because the packs are optional and the subscription is the only requirement, the timing of spending is straightforward, but it is worth laying out against Blizzard's dates. Today, nothing needs paying unless you want the beta on 17 September, which requires the Epic Pack or the Collection before that day. By 4 November you need an active subscription or Game Time to log in; if you bought the Epic Pack or the Collection, 30 days of Game Time begin on that date automatically, per Blizzard's list. On 9 December the raids unlock with no additional cost mentioned. On 11 January 2027 the Collection leaves the shop, after which the Heroic and Epic packs are the only stated ways to the Skyborne.

Nothing in Blizzard's material puts a price on later content. The roadmap promises 'more raids, dungeons, PvP updates, world content, additional quests … Hardcore, a revamped iconic raid, and major updates' as part of 'this evergreen version of Azeroth' — the same phrasing used for Classic's phased content, which was subscription-included. Blizzard has not said 'free' about any of it, and this site will not either; it has said nothing about paid expansions for Forever, and it has said the level cap stays at 60 rather than rising through expansions.

The Invite-A-Friend Launch Codes — what they are and what Blizzard has not said

Each pack carries 'Invite-A-Friend Launch Codes': one in the Heroic Pack, three in total in the Epic Pack, and three in the Collection, by Blizzard's own list. The four articles do not say what a code does; the product page's footnote does: it 'grants an eligible invitee access to WoW: Forever from November 4-11', codes 'will be provided by email beginning October 20', and 'excludes gift purchases'. Blizzard Watch counted the codes differently (1/2/3) from Blizzard (1/3/3); this site uses Blizzard's numbers. They are for launch rather than the beta, and they are the one thing in the packs that involves a second account.

Whether 'access' for those eight days includes the subscription requirement, or whether the invitee must already be subscribed, is one of the 'other restrictions' Blizzard defers to a Support Article. This page will quote that article once it is public.

What a new player actually needs on 4 November

A Battle.net account, the World of Warcraft client, and an active subscription or Game Time. That is the complete list from Blizzard's published material. There is no Forever download to buy, no code to redeem and no realm to select — Forever is realmless, so the first choice is a ruleset (Normal, PvP or Roleplaying at launch; Hardcore later). If you want to start as a Skyborne, add one of the packs before you make the character; if you do not, add nothing.

The release-date hub converts the launch hour to your time zone and lists every dated milestone. The price page lists the packs item by item. The Skyborne page explains the race the money buys.
