WoW Forever Priest changes: Shadow Word: Death, Penance, Prayer of Mending, new Gnome spells and every racial rework

'Priests continue to be the most versatile healer in World of Warcraft which is identifiably their most important strength.' That line from Blizzard's 30 September class deep dive is the lens for all of the WoW Forever priest changes: wider access to tools that used to be locked behind race or talents, and new talents that lean into healing, shields and Shadow damage over time.

This page goes through the article in the order a player meets it: baseline spells first, then the racial Priest spells race by race (including the two brand-new Gnome Priest spells), then Discipline, Holy and Shadow. Mostly in lists, because the source is a list. Nothing is added that Blizzard did not write, and the gaps are named at the end. Blizzard's caveat applies throughout: 'class abilities and talents may continue to evolve throughout the beta test and are subject to additional changes.'

Four spells every Priest now learns: Fear Ward, Devouring Plague, Divine Spirit and Shadow Word: Death

Blizzard's summary: 'Fear Ward and Devouring Plague are now available to all Priests at level 20, Divine Spirit is baseline at level 30, and Shadow Word: Death joins the class as a baseline ability at level 32.' The words 'regardless of race' on Fear Ward and Devouring Plague are the point: race no longer decides whether a Priest has them.

Shadow Word: Death 'joins the class' outright. It is a finishing spell with a self-damage risk built in, and Shadow's Early Demise talent builds on it.

  • Fear Ward: 'now available to all Priests at level 20, regardless of race.'
  • Devouring Plague: 'now available to all Priests at level 20, regardless of race.'
  • Divine Spirit: 'Now baseline to all Priests, learned at level 30.' The Deep Dive recap names it as one of the buff talents that are 'now baseline for their classes'.
  • Shadow Word: Death: baseline at level 32. 'Deals instant Shadow damage to the target but if the target is not killed by this spell, the Priest takes 10% of their max health in damage. 15 second cooldown.'
  • Improved Power Word: Fortitude: no longer a talent; Blizzard lists it with Divine Spirit as 'now baseline abilities'.

Fade, Prayer of Healing and Renew: three familiar spells that work differently

These changes are small on paper and large in a group. Prayer of Healing in particular changes who a Priest can heal from a raid frame, and Renew stops being a spell two Priests fight over.

  • Fade: 'Threat reduction effect doubled.'
  • Prayer of Healing: 'Instead of healing the Priest's own party, this spell now heals all the members of the target's party and their pets.' A Priest can now aim a group heal at any party in the raid.
  • Renew: 'Renew can now be active from multiple Priests on the same target.'
  • Holy talent removed alongside this: Improved Prayer of Healing is gone from the Holy tree.

Every racial Priest spell in WoW Forever, race by race

Blizzard keeps the original game's idea that each Priest race has its own spells: 'Each race of Priest has two spells unique to their Race. They have been fully re-evaluated, and new ones have been added for Gnome Priests.' Five of the ten non-Gnome spells are listed as 'Unchanged'; the other five come with new or revised descriptions. Fear Ward and Devouring Plague do not appear in the racial list at all, because every Priest now has them.

Blizzard gives levels and cooldowns for some spells and not for others; the table leaves those cells as 'Not stated' rather than guessing. 'Unchanged' means unchanged from the original game, and Blizzard does not restate those spells' effects in the article.

  • Healing-leaning racials: Human Divine Grace (emergency heal that clears Weakened Soul), Gnome Contingency Plan (pre-placed safety net), Night Elf Elune's Grace (miss chance).
  • Damage or control racials: Night Elf Starshards (bigger hit, now on a cooldown), Dwarf Chastise (root on Humanoids), Gnome Confounding Flash (area confuse).
  • Resource racial: Undead Dark Sacrifice, which turns health into Mana. Undead Priests also benefit from the reworked Cannibalize, which the Deep Dive recap says 'now restores Mana as well as Health'.
  • Unchanged in the article: Desperate Prayer, Feedback, Hex of Weakness, Shadowguard and Touch of Weakness.

The Gnome Priest: a new race-class combination with spells built for it

Gnomes could not be Priests in the original game. The Deep Dive recap lists the Gnome Priest first among the 'six new class-and-race combinations to explore: Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, and Undead Paladin, with more planned for future updates.' The Priest article then supplies what that combination needs: two racial Priest spells written for it. The full list of new pairings is on the WoW Forever race-class combinations page.

  • Confounding Flash (level 10): 'Confuses up to 5 nearby enemies for 3 seconds. Effect broken by taking damage. 0.5 second cast time. 2-minute cooldown.' A short area escape tool for a class Blizzard calls 'very vulnerable'.
  • Contingency Plan (level 20): 'Places a ward on a friendly target for 30 seconds. If that target's health drops below 35%, the target is instantly protected by a damage absorb shield and gains a heal-over-time effect.'
  • Contingency Plan stacks: 'These two effects can be stacked with Renew and Power Word: Shield.' It is instant cast with a 5-minute cooldown.
  • What is not published: the size of the absorb or heal, the Gnome Priest's starting area or class trainer, or any Gnome Priest storyline. Blizzard published a storyline for the Undead Paladin; it has not done so for the Gnome Priest in these sources.

Discipline: Penance at 21 points, Soul Warding at 16, Divine Aegis

Discipline is the spec Blizzard ties to the Priest's unique strength: 'As Discipline, they can lean even more into that strength with talents that improve upon Power Word: Shield.' The new talents below are the ones that change how the spec plays; the reworked older ones follow in the next section.

  • Penance (new 21-point gold medal talent): 'Channeled over 2 seconds with 12 second cooldown. Can target enemies to deal damage every second, or allies to heal damage every second.'
  • Soul Warding (new 16-point gold medal talent): 'reduces the cooldown on Power Word: Shield and its Mana cost. Requires Improved Power Word: Shield.'
  • Renewed Hope (new; requires Soul Warding): 'Increases critical strike chance of Flash Heal, Binding Heal, Lesser Heal, Heal, Greater Heal, and Penance when casting on targets with Weakened Soul.' Each of those heals also shortens Weakened Soul on the target.
  • Divine Aegis: 'Critical heals create an absorb shield for 12 seconds on your target based on a percentage of the amount healed. This effect does not stack.'
  • Power in Light (new row 1): 'Increased Smite and Penance damage done to targets afflicted with your Holy Fire.'
  • Twin Disciplines (new row 1): 'Increases damage and healing done by instant cast spells.'

Discipline talents that were moved, merged or retuned

The remaining Discipline entries are mostly about cost and placement. One line in the article reads 'Mental Strength: Moved from row 4 up to row 4', which is reported here exactly as Blizzard wrote it; the article does not clarify it.

  • Wand Specialization: 'Now only requires two talent points for the same benefit.'
  • Silent Resolve: 'Now also reduces the duration of Stun, Fear, and Silence effects on you.' Unbreakable Will 'has been combined into Silent Resolve'.
  • Holy Precision: 'Increases chance to hit with Holy spells by up to 18%.' Blizzard's stated reason: it is 'intended to remove the need for hit chance on healing Priests, who are not expected to wear gear that increased hit chance.'
  • Improved Power Word: Shield: 'Slightly more increase per talent point.'
  • Mental Agility: 'Moved from row 4 up to row 3. Now costs only 3 talent points for the same effect and also benefits Smite and Holy Fire.'
  • Meditation: 'Mana benefit from spirit increased substantially.'
  • Improved Inner Fire: 'Benefit to armor increased, and now also increases charges.'
  • Mental Strength: 'Now increases Intellect by a larger percentage instead of Mana by a percentage.'
  • Improved Mana Burn: 'Reduction to cast time of Mana Burn increased.'
  • Removed: Force of Will. Improved Power Word: Fortitude and Divine Spirit left the tree because they are baseline.

Holy: Binding Heal at 16 points, Prayer of Mending at 31, and no more Lightwell

Holy's new spells both heal more than one person per cast, and one talent explicitly rewards switching heals. Blizzard does not describe a Holy-specific aim beyond the class-wide one of keeping the Priest 'the most versatile healer'.

  • Binding Heal (new 16-point gold medal talent): 'Heals the Priest and their current target. No cooldown, 1.5 second cast. Tuned to be as good as Flash Heal even if the Priest needs no healing.'
  • Prayer of Mending (new 31-point gold medal talent; Spirit of Redemption required): 10 second cooldown; a 30 second effect that heals the target the next time they take damage or receive non-periodic healing, then 'jumps to another nearby party or raid member within 20 yards', up to 'a total of 5 times'. 'Each target may only have one Prayer of Mending active.'
  • Litany of Light: 'Each time you cast a healing spell, you are refunded part of its Mana cost if the name of the spell is different than the previous healing spell you cast.'
  • Twilight Focus (formerly Healing Focus): 'Now grants pushback protection on all spellcasts, but costs 3 talent points instead of 2.'
  • Blessed Recovery: 'Now also triggers from any attack that deals more than 30% of your maximum health in a single hit.'
  • Inspiration: 'Now triggers from all non-periodic critical heals.'
  • Improved Healing: 'Now also reduces Mana cost of Penance and Prayer of Mending.'
  • Searing Light (redesigned): increases all Holy damage by a smaller percentage, and Holy Fire damage can make your next Holy Nova cost no Mana.
  • Spiritual Guidance: 'Bonus to spell damage reduced to approximately one third as much as the bonus to spell healing.'
  • Spiritual Healing: 'Now only needs 3 talent points for the same benefit.'
  • Removed: Improved Prayer of Healing and Lightwell.

Shadow: a stronger Shadowform, Devouring Contagion and Early Demise

Shadow is where the baseline Shadow Word: Death and Devouring Plague pay off, with one talent for each. Blizzard is clear about the spec's limits: Shadow Priests 'deal powerful damage-over-time (DoT) but lack the full utility in that role that could be found on a class such as the Warlock.' The Warlock's own changes are covered on the WoW Forever Warlock changes page.

  • Shadowform: 'Now allows all non-healing spells to be cast while in Shadowform, reduces the Mana cost of all Shadow spells by 50%, and increases the critical strike damage bonus of Shadow spells by 100%. Bonus to Shadow damage dealt decreased.'
  • Devouring Contagion (new row 5): reduces Devouring Plague's Mana cost, and when an afflicted target dies, Devouring Plague 'will jump to a new enemy within 5 yards with the same remaining duration.'
  • Early Demise (new row 6): 'Increases Shadow Word: Death's critical strike chance on targets below 20% health.'
  • Vampiric Embrace: 'Moved to the row 3 as the 16-point gold medal talent. Now lasts 30 seconds with a 1-minute Cooldown.' Improved Vampiric Embrace is removed.
  • Improved Mind Flay (new row 3; requires Mind Flay): more damage and range, weaker movement slow.
  • Shadow Weaving: 'Now benefits only the casting Priest and not other party or raid members. Percentage increase to damage decreased moderately.'
  • Shadow Focus: moved up to row 1 from row 2; now 'increases the chance for Shadow spells to hit' instead of reducing the target's chance to resist.
  • Shadow Reach: moved up to row 2 from row 4; 'Now requires only 2 talent points for the same effect.'
  • Shadow Affinity: 'Threat reduction to Shadow spells increased slightly.'
  • Improved Psychic Scream: 'Blackout is now a pre-requisite.' Silence 'No longer requires Improved Psychic Scream as a pre-requisite.'

Where the five Priest gold medal talents sit in the Forever tree

The article and the Deep Dive recap agree on the frame: talents start at level 10, and trees keep 'one-point milestone talents at 11, 21, and 31 points, now joined by a new 16-point milestone.' The recap adds 'the same number of rows' as patch 1.12. The Warrior half of the same article names only 16-point talents; the Priest half names milestones for five talents, including a 21-point and a 31-point one. The window in Blizzard's screenshot labels the third tree 'Shadow Magic'. The WoW Forever talents page explains the milestone system for every class.

  • Discipline 16 points: Soul Warding.
  • Discipline 21 points: Penance.
  • Holy 16 points: Binding Heal.
  • Holy 31 points: Prayer of Mending (requires Spirit of Redemption).
  • Shadow 16 points: Vampiric Embrace (row 3).
  • Not stated: the Discipline 11 and 31-point talents, the Holy 11 and 21-point talents, and the Shadow 11, 21 and 31-point talents.
  • Respecs, including Legacy talents: 'visit a class trainer in one of the major cities'. Dual Specialization 'becomes available at level 40'.

What Blizzard says a Priest is for, and what it has not published

Blizzard's closing paragraph is a description of role, and it is worth reading whole. Priests can use both heal-over-time spells and direct heals 'while having the unique capability of providing damage absorption shields which provide damage mitigation.' The weakness is restated, not fixed: 'Priests are also a very vulnerable class with their limitation of wearing cloth armor and few ways to escape enemies. They instead need to rely on the support of friends with tanking or control abilities.' The Gnome's Confounding Flash and the Fade buff help with that a little; they do not remove it.

A Warrior tank will notice one Priest-related change in their own article: Power Word: Shield 'will no longer decrease Rage gained'. That interaction is covered on the WoW Forever Warrior changes page.

  • Not published: any healing, damage or absorb values, Mana costs, or spell coefficients.
  • Not published: the strength of Divine Aegis's percentage, Holy Precision per point, or Meditation's new value.
  • Not published: changes to Power Word: Shield itself, Mind Control, Psychic Scream, Holy Nova, Mind Blast or Resurrection, which the article does not list.
  • Not published: rotations, stat weights or which spec Blizzard expects in raids. Any guide that gives these is not quoting Blizzard.

Overall, Priests bring a valuable set of tools that make them an asset for any party or raid.
